MORE ABOUT LADAKH!!! "Little Tibet" " The Moonland" and the last Shangri-la are names that have been applied to Ladakh, all with a bit of truth. Ladakh is a high-altitude Plateau North of the Himalaya situated geographically in Tibet. It´s a miniture version of Tibet, the people are Tibetan in their culture, and there are many Tibetan refugees. The Himalaya are a very effective barrier to rain - few clouds creep across their awesome height and as a result Ladakh is barren beyond belief. Only where rivers, running from faraway glaciers, or melting snow, carry water to habitation do you find plant Life - hence the moonland label, since Ladakh is as dry as the Sahara. Only from June to September are the roads into Ladakh from Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh not covered with snow and only since 1979 has there been airline flights into Ladakh. That flight is one of the most spectacular in the world. Ladahk is well worth the effort of getting there. It´s an otherwordly place - strange gompas perched on soaring hilltops, ancient palaces clinging to sheer rock walls, and shattered looking landscapes splashed with small but brilliant patches of green. But most of all there are the delightful Ladakhis, friendly as only the Tibetan people can be and immensely colourful. RELIGION. At Kargil, on the Srinagar to Leh road, the Islamic influence dies out and you are in a Buddhist region. The people follow Tibetan Tantric Buddishm which has much emphasis on magic and demons. All around Ladakh are gompas, the Buddihist monasteries. They are fascinating to visit, although they have become very commercially minded since Ladakhs Tourist boom commenced. There´s a good side to this though. prior to tourism the gompas were gradually becoming more and more neglected. Today many of them have been refurbished and repaired with profits from visting Westerners. The monks are happy to have visitors wander around the gompas, sit in on the ceremonies, try the appalling (to the Western palate) taste of butter tea and take photographs. Please join me in a picture journey into one of the most interesting regions of the world. WELCOME TO LADAKH!!!
